Waikato District Council takes health and safety very seriously.


Waikato District Council is committed to fostering a culture of zero harm, ensuring that our employees and communities remain safe and healthy every day.

So, whether you are working for or on Council assets and/or supplying services, or holding a community event, we will want to make sure that everyone is kept safe and healthy.

As an event organiser you are responsible for planning and managing risk to ensure your event provides a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), you are legally required to protect the health and safety of all individuals involved in or affected by your event. This includes participants, spectators, event staff, contractors, subcontractors, volunteers, sponsors,

To gain approval for hosting an event on Council-owned public spaces, your documentation must show that health and safety have been thoroughly addressed during your event planning.

We are here to assist you in creating an event health and safety plan that outlines how you will deliver a safe and healthy event environment.

Contractors working with Waikato District Council share the responsibility of ensuring health and safety for themselves and others.

All contractors performing physical work for the Council must complete pre-qualification before starting any contract. Being pre-qualified helps us ensure that contractors have the necessary systems, resources, and capabilities to manage their work safely.

Waikato District Council accepts the following pre-qualification schemes:

SHE pre-qual

SHE offers a streamlined contractor pre-qualification process and provides evaluation services based on ISO 45001 and industry best practices.

Tōtika

The Tōtika scheme is a standardised pre-qualification framework that can be assessed by one of the accredited providers.

Depending on the nature of the work, associated risks, and contractor criteria, alternative pre-qualification schemes may be accepted. If you are pre-qualified through another provider, please contact us to confirm if it meets our requirements. zeroharm@waidc.govt.nz

Please note, completing the pre-qualification process does not guarantee a contract with the Council.
