Rates rebates

If you own your own home and are on a low income, you may be eligible for a partial discount on your rates bill.

The maximum rebate you can get is $805.You may be eligible for all or only part of this amount.
The amount is determined by your income, how many dependants you have, and how much your annual rates bill is.

The closing date for property rate rebates for the 2025/2026 financial year is 30 June 2026.

Apply for a rates rebate

Note: It can take up to two months to process a rebate.

Households can have income up to $32,210 and get the maximum rebate amount. Households getting more than this may still get a rebate, but it will be less than the full amount.

SuperGold cardholders and their households can have income up to $45,000 and get the maximum rebate amount. A couple who only get NZ superannuation earn around this amount.

Please ensure you have the following information before applying for a rates rebate.

  • All Gross Income for the tax year 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025 (IR 544) for yourself if you are employed
  • All Gross Income for the tax year 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025 (IR 544) for you partner/joint homeowner if they are employed (if applicable)
  • If you and your partner (if applicable) are receiving a WINZ benefit, please advise council staff which benefit you receive.  It is not necessary for you to obtain an IR 544 as listed above if your sole income is a WINZ benefit
  • If you are self-employed a full set of accounts for the prior tax year are required
  • A copy of your invoice from Waikato Regional Council showing rates for the year 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 is helpful.  Alternatively, Council staff can obtain the information for you.

It can take up to two months to process your property rates rebate. 

Once your application is processed, we will write to you to let you know if your application is successful, and the amount of your rebate.

We will credit the rebate amount to your property rates account once we process and approve your application.

We will let you know how much you have left to pay on your next property rates notice.

Note: We will not process your property rate rebate application in time to cover your first quarterly instalment. To avoid a penalty, you need to pay the first instalment.
