Notice of Council Resolution on Electoral System and of Right to Demand a Poll

Notice is given under section 28 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that the Waikato District Council has resolved to retain the First Past the Post electoral system for its 2025 triennial general election.

Electors of the Waikato District Council have a right to demand a poll at any time to countermand the resolution to use the First Past the Post electoral system.

Should a valid demand for a poll be received by 11 December 2023, a poll will be held by 14 March 2024 on whether the First Past the Post or the Single Transferable Voting electoral system will be used for the next two triennial elections (2025 and 2028) of the Waikato District Council.

A valid demand must be:

  • made in writing;
  • signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Waikato District Council. This equates to 2,719 elector signatures;
  • delivered to the Waikato District Council, 15 Galileo Street, Ngaaruawaahia;
  • by 5:00pm, Monday 11 December 2023 (for the outcome of the poll to apply for the 2025 and 2028 triennial elections of the Waikato District Council.

Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Waikato District Council.
