Wheelie good times had at the Te Awa River Ride celebration

Communities came together to celebrate cycling connectivity along the great Te Awa River Ride last Sunday 26 March.

The celebration event, run by The Te Awa River Ride Charitable Trust, invited cyclists, walkers and runners to explore the newly completed River Ride from Waipa through to Ngaruawahia.

“The day saw a mix of young and old come together to celebrate connectivity between Waikato towns and communities along our beautiful awa,” says Senior Community Engagement Advisor Karlene Rhind.

“Some were bold enough to cycle the full 65km track, while others tackled a smaller portion by foot or bike.”

The celebration event encouraged participants to ride the trail between 11am – 2pm, finishing with a prizegiving at Hamiltons Gourmet in the Gardens event with live music, food trucks and good vibes.

Along the course of the ride, participants were asked to collect stamps on their passport from a variety of locations to be in with a chance to win their share of a $13,000 prize pool. Stations in the Waikato district portion included Breaking Bread café and Durham Street Precinct.

“A massive thank you to our Councillors, community members, businesses and all the volunteers who manned the stations along the Waikato district section of the ride.” adds Rhind.

“Your efforts are what created a successful and thoroughly enjoyable multi-community event, this is your moment!”
