Te Kauwhata Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade
The Waikato District Council partnered with Watercare and together we are planning water infrastructure improvements across the region, as part of an ongoing commitment to maintain and improve services.
The Te Kauwhata wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) Upgrade commenced operation in December 2023. We are happy to report that construction is completed, and the plant is operational. We are decommissioning the old equipment.
The upgrade was pivotal to ensuring that the treatment process meets regulatory compliance and can be scaled to accommodate anticipated catchment growth.
Membrane Bioreactor Process
The Te Kauwhata WWTP employs a Membrane Bioreactor and Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MBR/MABR) treatment system that is proven and renowned for its compactness, resilience, and scalability. The MBR technology offers superior treatment quality, incorporating a filtration barrier to safeguard the environment. This state-of-the-art facility is pivotal in elevating treatment standards, promoting sustainable practices, and minimising the impact on the environment.
Wider Outcomes:
- Environment: The upgraded facility contributes to improved water quality, benefiting local ecosystems and nearby water bodies that support aquatic life. This has a positive impact on the community's overall well-being and the sustainability of the region.
- Enhanced Infrastructure: A leading scalable design underscores a major improvement in critical infrastructure, fostering economic growth and development.
The successful implementation of the MBR/MABR technology at Te Kauwhata WWTP marks a significant milestone in achieving improved water quality, environmental stewardship, compliance, and resilience. Collectively these contribute to a healthier, sustainable future for the community and region.
