Shopping smarter saves money, and our preferred option for future water services will help us do just that.
Why is a partnership with Hamilton City our preferred option? It gives Waikato District more bang for our buck. By creating a joint Council-Owned Organisation (CCO) for water services, we can buy equipment and services more efficiently, just like saving money by buying in bulk at the supermarket.
Working together would make us both stronger:
Better deals: We’ll be more appealing to suppliers and sub-contractors.
Focused expertise: The new CCO will be dedicated to water services.
Smart spending: Our current contractor, Watercare, has shown us the benefits of buying power through their relationship with their Auckland division.
Government preference: The government prefers the CCO approach over contractors, which will bring long-term financial advantages.
Other options: Joining other Waikato councils isn’t feasible right now. However, we’re open to joining the two CCOs in the future, and our colleagues at Hamilton City Council are too.
Rates and costs: This doesn’t necessarily mean that rates and costs for water will go down, because prices all around us are likely to keep going up. But this structure of organisation means that we’ll be in a much stronger position in the long-term by having more power when it comes to buying and borrowing.
We’re seeking your input on water services as part of our Long-Term Plan in April. Find more background on Local Water Done Well on our Water Matters page.
