Boundaries aren't barriers

Kia ora and greetings to you all,

Our district is buzzing with growth, not surprising we are one of the fastest growing district in the region – 13.75% in the last five years! We are all experiencing change in our communities that impact our lives and our families, our businesses and rural economies. It's awesome to see the council focusing on both our current needs and the exciting opportunities ahead for our district. Even with the limited levers we have, we're committed to addressing the needs of our current and future residents. Working together is such a powerful way to drive positive change and ensure sustainable development. As we tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities of our rapidly expanding community, we know that working together makes us stronger! Boundaries? They're just chances to connect, share, and learn.

Take our shared services approach, for example. We're teaming up with neighbouring councils and service providers to ensure our residents get top-notch services efficiently. Whether it's infrastructure, emergency management, or community development, partnerships help us achieve more. By pooling our expertise and resources, we're stretching every ratepayer dollar further and working smarter as well as harder to make sure no one misses out.

The new Great South Road roundabout in Ngaaruawaahia is a shining example of this teamwork. Jointly funded by central government, developers, and us, this project is an investment in future-proofing our growing town and population. Similarly, the upgrade to Telephone Road SH1B shows how collaboration between community action groups, central government, and NZTA Waka Kotahi can get things moving, ensuring our people and places are safe and life is better for everyone.

This spirit of collaboration goes beyond council services – it's at the heart of our community. This month, we welcome new citizens who have chosen to make our district their home. Our citizenship ceremonies are always a highlight for me, reminding me of the diverse and vibrant communities that shape our future. To those new to our district – welcome! We're so glad you're here.

We're also celebrating new growth across the district. Businesses are expanding, infrastructure projects are moving forward, and we're making improvements that will serve future generations. Our role is to ensure that as we grow, we stay connected; working with our residents, mana whenua, local businesses, government agencies, and our neighbouring councils to create a district that is welcoming, resilient, and ready for the future. There are exciting opportunities ahead for Waikato businesses with the launch of our refreshed economic development brand, Takitini - many, united as one - in March. This initiative is designed to elevate our wonderful local businesses, and I can't wait to share more about it next time. It's such an honour to be involved in something that creates networks and support for our communities and businesses.

I look forward to sharing more about these collaborations and how they will benefit you. In the meantime, my door is always open, and I encourage you to stay engaged as we shape the future together.

Ngaa mihi and kind regards,
Mayor Jacqui
