Turning tyres into treasure

Have you got any unwanted tyres taking up space in your garage or garden?

Mark your calendar for Saturday, 7 December, and head into Te Kauwhata for a tyre recycling event.

This initiative, organised by Waikato District Council in partnership with Treadlite New Zealand, offers the opportunity for residents to properly dispose of their old tyres and contribute to a more sustainable community.

Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer, Ogechi Okoro highlights the importance of this event.

"Recycling tyres is at the heart of our commitment to environmental sustainability. By keeping tyres out of landfills, we're not just reducing waste—we're actively protecting our local environment.”

“Our partnership with Treadlite is a perfect example of this mission in action. They transform old tyres into versatile rubber products, giving them a second life as playground surfaces, wheelchair ramps, and sports surfaces. So, your tyres get to roll on and make a difference!"

This event is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to reduce waste and promote cleaner, greener communities. By recycling tyres instead of sending them to landfill, we can help reduce pollution and encourage more sustainable practices in the Waikato district.

This tyre drop-off is open to all residents with passenger car tyres, light truck tyres, and SUV tyres to dispose of, with a maximum of 10 tyres per customer. Commercial and tractor tyres will not be accepted.

Please remember to remove the rims and ensure the tyres are clean before dropping them off.

Numbers are restricted so be sure to register your interest today and bring along your unwanted tyres!

The exact location will be shared upon registration, drive-up's will not be allowed.

“This is a perfect example of how we can work together to make a tangible difference,” says Ogechi.

“It’s not just about recycling tyres—it's about creating a sense of community responsibility and moving towards a more sustainable future.”
