Waikato District Council is preparing to consult on a proposed reclassification of a portion of Pookeno Domain (Avon Reserve) from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose (Community Centre). As well as the proposal to lease part of the reserve for the establishment of an urban marae.
Currently, Avon Reserve is a popular community spot that’s partly used for its dog park and recently renovated tennis courts.
If approved, the reclassification would enable Council to grant a 30-year lease to Te Hau Kainga me ngaa Mana Whenua o Pokeno Charitable Trust for the construction and operation of an urban marae on the reclassified land.
Te Hau Kainga me ngaa Mana Whenua o Pokeno Charitable Trust is a collective of whaanau who have lived in the local area for generations, committed to being a voice within the diverse community.
Under the new classification, there would also continue to be a dog park in the reserve but it would be relocated within the reserve.
The tennis courts, and the use of them, would not be affected if the reclassification goes ahead.
“The reclassification would bring a boost for the community as a whole, while the beloved dog park continues to operate as usual within a dedicated area” says Deputy General Manager, Service Delivery, Anthony Averill.
Averill emphasised the importance of wanting the community’s input into this decision. "We are excited about the potential for Pookeno Domain as we look to the future, and we want to ensure that all community voices are heard, especially regarding the impact on current users of the reserve."
We’re inviting residents to share their views and find out more on the proposed reclassification and lease grant at a public drop-in session being held on Saturday, 14 September, from 2pm till 4pm at Pookeno Community Hall.
The proposed reclassification and lease grant is open for feedback from Monday, 26 August, with consultation closing on 23 September.
