AFFCO Horotiu Dog Park, on the corner of Great South Road and Horotiu Road, is due to close to the public from Monday 27 February 2023.
The land used for the park, previously leased from AFFCO Holdings Limited in Horotiu, is required by the owners for future development.
As a result, Waikato District Council’s residency on the land will come to an end.
Council’s Deputy General Manager Service Delivery Megan May says teams are investigating a suitable alternative in the area for our communities that this will impact.
“We know this dog park is very popular. We’re looking at options but we may not have an immediate alternative, and that is not ideal for our communities who use Horotiu Dog Park, says Deputy General Manager Service Delivery Megan May.
“We would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience in the interim.”
Council would also like to thank AFFCO for their support in allowing Waikato district residents and their pets to enjoy this space for the last 25 years.
The playground at AFFCO Horotiu Park is also set to be removed, with the idea that the equipment may be used and repurposed for dog agility equipment to be placed at the alternative location, once details for such a location have been confirmed.
The Council website will be updated with information as this is made available, and lists alternative dog exercise areas across the Waikato district.
The closest fenced, off-leash one is in Ngaruawahia, opposite the BP service station.
