Tamahere Reserve now open

Tamahere Reserve is now open to the public after work was completed on a number of trees.

The reserve, which is off Tauwhare Rd, is a long-tailed bat habitat so extra precautions were taken when completing this work.

The reserve was closed in late March so the work could be done.

Community Connections Manager Megan May says Council worked with the Department of Conservation to ensure the continued presence of the endangered bats.

Work completed in the reserve included the removal of one pine tree completely and cutting down a second tree to 6 metres. Pruning was also carried out on at least a dozen other trees to minimise the likelihood of any future branch failures.

The trees in the reserve will be part of an ongoing monitoring regime.
