Six Tuakau tamariki have done their bit to keep their community clean and tidy.
Last month the Dr John Lightbody Reserve playground was vandalised with toilet paper. Tamariki from the Tuakau Youth Centre were quickly on the scene to clean it up. They were doing it because “it’s our park”.
A leader from the Tuakau Youth Centre saw photos of the damage on Facebook and quickly sprung to action, requesting any helpers get down to the park to help tidy up.
Riley Harlick, Reagan Harlick, Blake Karauria, Tyler Ranum, Kingston Leaf and Maxwell Hoani-MacLean have now been recognised by Council for their efforts.
Community Connections Manager Megan May was on hand last week to present the youth with certificates signed by Mayor Allan Sanson, circus tickets and an annual pass to the Tuakau pools.
“Even though they didn’t do the damage, they took responsibility for their playground and took the initiative to clean it up. If more people were like these six young people, our communities would be better off,” Ms May said.
