Raglan freedom campers beware – we’ve had reports of people impersonating Council officers and asking campers for payment.
“With summer around the corner, there’s been an increase in the number of freedom campers out in Raglan,” says Monitoring Team Leader Craig Birkett.
“We’ve been told of six incidents where people have been asked to pay for a camping ‘pass’. They are then given a sheet of paper as their ‘permit’. Unfortunately in many of these cases the campers have handed over money, thinking they are doing the right thing.”
“There is no such thing as a ‘pass’ or permit to freedom camp in Raglan,” says Mr Birkett. “Council will not ask you for money, however if you are camping in a prohibited area you will be given an infringement notice.”
If you are unsure about where you can camp, check out our website for information: www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz/freedomcamping.
Please be aware that our enforcement officers have identification and if you are unsure, please ask to see it. They are happy to show it. If you are approached by a person asking for payment that does not have identification, please report this to your local Police station.
