What level of quality would you like to see regarding facilities at the Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza?
That’s the question Waikato District Council is asking the Tamahere community through letters being delivered to ratepayers this week (starting July 31).
Tamahere Ward ratepayers are being asked to give their preference between two proposed options.
One option includes a basic level of service package of facilities which would feature a basic playground, skatepark, standard connecting footpaths, planting and park furniture.
The other option can be classed as an enhanced level of service package of facilities which would feature a better and bigger playground, a more exciting skatepark, a fitness trail looping the reserve, a basketball half-court, staging and lighting in the piazza area and higher specification walkways and park furniture.
The basic option would require no further funding, but the enhanced level of service package would incur an estimated $38 annual targeted rate for Tamahere Ward ratepayers.
Initial community engagement during the design process of the Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza indicated that the local community wanted an enhanced level of service package of facilities.
And the Tamahere Community Committee supports the enhanced level of service package, as does Tamahere Ward Councillor Aksel Bech.
But Waikato District Council Manager Programme Delivery Jacki Remihana says it is important that the wider Tamahere community make their views known to Council.
“The response of Tamahere Ward ratepayers will give Council direction concerning the standard of facilities to be included in the Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza,” she says.
If the Tamahere Ward ratepayers indicate they wish to fund the high-quality package of facilities, Council would then work with the Tamahere Community Committee to establish a detailed plan of what this would look like.
Meanwhile preparatory earthworks and drainage for the recreation reserve’s sports fields is complete with the main stormwater pond now in and fenced.
The Tamahere Community Committee has led the first stage of tree planting along the recreation reserve’s boundary and grass has been sown on the sports fields.
Ratepayers have until 25 August to indicate which option they would prefer regarding the standard of facilities at the Tamahere Recreation Reserve and Piazza.
