Cans for a Cause proceeds delivered to food banks

The proceeds of Waikato District Council’s Cans for a Cause are being distributed this week.

Parcels of non-perishable food are being delivered by Council staff to food banks throughout the district.

The food will reach families in need just in time for Christmas.

Staff at Waikato District Council have been donating non-perishable food during December as part of its Casual Fridays fundraising initiative.

Usually labelled Coins for a Cause, staff have been encouraged to donate a gold coin to monthly-nominated local causes in exchange for the opportunity to “dress down” on Fridays.

Coins were swapped for cans of food for Casual Fridays in December.

Waikato District Council Acting Chief Executive, Tony Whittaker said he was pleased with the staff’s response.

“Donations have been coming in thick and fast. Everyone here has really got behind Cans for a Cause,” he said.

“We hope our contribution eases the financial pressure for some of the district’s struggling families this Christmas.”

Food banks that have benefited from Cans for a Cause include Ngaruawahia Community Care and Crisis Support, Huntly Community Advice Centre, Raglan Foodbank and Tuakau Budgeting and Family Support Services.

Other good causes supported by Waikato District Council through Casual Fridays during 2016 have included Raglan and Port Waikato Surf Lifesaving, Waikato Health Trust’s Mental Health Research Fund, The Heart Trust – Waikato and Movember.
