‘Travelling suitcase’ exhibition display at Council venues

Selected works from a travelling suitcase art exhibition

Waikato District Council‘s ‘travelling suitcase’ art exhibition is now at its final stop at the Ngaruawahia Public Library and will remain on display until Friday 12 August.

The exhibition, which attracted works from a number of artists living in or connected with the district, forms part of the Council’s local celebrations for Matariki (the Maaori New Year).

Waikato District Council Chief Executive, Gavin Ion, says the number and variety of works received was impressive and they created a successful display throughout Matariki at a number of the Council’s venues around the district.

A ‘travelling suitcase‘ exhibition is one which features artworks which can easily travel from place to place. To be eligible for the exhibition, the works had to apply either traditional Maaori arts and crafts methods or contemporary modern methods, says Mr Ion. “Each artwork also needed to embrace and demonstrate what the Maaori New Year means to each artist and it must have been created within the last 12 months.”
