The Huntly Footbridge maintenance programme has hit a bump in the road.
In early April, the middle span of the iconic structure was removed for spray-painting followed by some basic maintenance.
Contractors also scheduled time to undertake some basic surfacing repairs on both approach ramps. However Service Delivery General Manager, Tim Harty says an engineering assessment on the ramps has revealed they need more TLC than expected.
"With any major structural maintenance project like this, it’s possible that when you start peeling away the paint layers – literally in this case – you’ll find other issues to be addressed. The positive is we’ve discovered the issues while we’re working on the bridge and not 12 months down the track, because we’d have to close it off again.
We completely understand the frustration for bridge users and we’re doing everything we can to provide safe but limited access".
"The bridge is open for the walking school bus and we’ve also provided a minivan for kids needing a ride to school. If our contractors see anyone looking lost they’re also assisting with access or directions to an alternate route.
"We appreciate your patience but we need to ensure the bridge is safe for you community now during maintenance and in the future."
Full access will be available for Sunday’s Huntly Half Marathon.
